PINUP WORKSHOP TURNS PLAIN JANES INTO PINUP QUEENS
Bombshell Betty is on a mission to change the way women feel about their bodies, one workshop at a time.

In April 2008, San Francisco based burlesque mogul and "body image activist" Bombshell Betty launched an ongoing national tour to bring her Pinup Modeling Workshop to cities including New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, New Haven and San Francisco, with more locations being added every month. During a season when most women are timidly trying on bathing suits under the unforgiving glare of flourescent dressing room lights and wishing they looked like someone else from the neck down, the Bombshell Betty Pinup Workshop offers women of every body type, age, and background the opportunity to learn how to be more photogenic, improve over-all body image, and come away with many beautiful images of themselves.

For many women, this new way of looking at their bodies can be life-altering - and don't think that this kind of experience is only for exhibitionists! "I was really nervous, but I would say it is the best thing I could have done for myself," says Michelle Kientz, who participated in a workshop in San Francisco. "It really helped my self-esteem and overall confidence in pictures and in my everyday life." Jenn Kerins, a conservative professional from Conneticut who attended the first Manhattan workshop in April, agrees. "I'm recently divorced," confides Kerins, "and this workshop made me feel beautiful and sexy again. For that I will be eternally grateful."

The workshop begins with a posing lesson designed for people with no modeling experience or training. Students are taught posing techniques for visually "scupting" their bodies for photos, pinup posing techniques, and how to make sexy bedroom eyes and other flattering facial expressions. Then all the participants receive a pinup style makeover and take turns getting into sultry poses in front of the camera. But don't get the idea that this is only suitable for exhibitionists! To make sure even the shyest women get flattering, sexy images, Bombshell Betty directs all of the posing. This is a huge help to many fledgling pinup queens.

"The posing instruction was great and taught me how to make the most of my body type," said Kerins, "but what helped the most was Betty's guidance during the picture taking. I liked so many of the photos, and I don't think I would have had many pictures I liked without her showing me how to pose myself frame by frame. I've always considered myself unphotogenic, but now I see that I just needed to learn how to work the camera. It's all about how you pose."

"Body image activism" as Bombshell Betty calls it, is hardly a new activity for this burlesque-obsessed entrepreneur. The tall brunette started teaching her trademarked "Burlesquercise"(TM) classes in 2004, and now runs her own dance studio in San Francisco where she offers classes in everything from burlesque dancing and choreography to feather fan making and negotiation skills for performers. Betty has taught thousands of women how to shimmy and strut their way to greater happiness and is currently in the process of hiring teachers in cities across the country to present her brand of burlesque dance and spread her body confidence ideals to women everywhere. "It feels so wonderful to watch the women in my workshops come out of their shells and start to appreciate their bodies," Betty says, "Not in a few months when they lose those extra pounds. Now. It's amazing to be able to effect a lasting change in the way people see themselves in only a few hours."
